A New Ringmaster Takes the Stage: Cirque du Soleil Announces Mark Cornell as CEO!
Cirque du Soleil, the world-renowned entertainment powerhouse, has just announced a significant leadership change. Veteran Mark Cornell, a seasoned professional from the luxury goods and live entertainment sectors, is stepping in as the new President and CEO. This marks a new era for the iconic circus troupe, promising exciting developments ahead.
Cornell's background is quite impressive. He most recently served as CEO of ATG Entertainments, a major player in the live theater scene, managing venues in London's West End and on Broadway. He takes the reins from Daniel Lamarre, who had been serving as interim CEO since April 2025. Lamarre himself has a long history with Cirque du Soleil, having led the company for nearly two decades before stepping down in 2021. Before Lamarre, Stephane Lefebvre held the top executive position for three years.
Lamarre will now transition to the role of executive vice-chairman of the board, where he will focus on business development. Cornell, who is set to assume his new role on November 17th, will be relocating to Montreal. His impressive resume includes executive positions at prestigious companies like Moët Hennessy USA, Sotheby’s Europe, and Krug Champagne, bringing a wealth of consumer brand experience to the table.
"Mark Cornell embodies bold leadership and operational excellence," stated Gabriel de Alba and Jim Murren, co-chairs of the board at Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. "His arrival marks an important milestone in our ambition to strengthen our global reach and enrich the experience we offer to audiences worldwide."
But here's where it gets interesting: The pandemic significantly impacted Cirque du Soleil's live shows, leading to a global shutdown. Following the reopening, the Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group was rebuilt under new stakeholders, including TPG Capital and China’s Fosun Capital Group. This restructuring highlights the resilience and adaptability of the company.
In his own statement, Cornell expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "It is an honor to join Cirque du Soleil, a global icon of creativity and innovation. I have admired this brand for many years, not only for its artistic excellence, but for its ability to connect cultures and inspire audiences around the world. I am excited to collaborate with the talented teams in Montreal and across the globe to write the next chapter of this extraordinary journey."
