UDSM Revamps Curricula for Employability & Innovation! (2025)

Dar es Salaam University Revolutionizes Education: A Bold Move Towards Employability and Innovation

The University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is taking a bold step to ensure its graduates are equipped for the future. In a recent graduation ceremony, the Chairperson of the UDSM Council, Ambassador Mwanaidi Sinare Maajar, revealed a plan that could revolutionize higher education in the region and beyond. But is it a step in the right direction?

Ambassador Mwanaidi announced that UDSM is undergoing a comprehensive curriculum review to emphasize innovation and entrepreneurship. The goal? To empower graduates with skills for self-employment, enhance their employability, and foster a mindset of innovation to tackle societal issues. This move comes as a response to the evolving demands of the job market and the need for graduates to be future-ready.

The ceremony, held on November 18, 2025, was graced by Former President Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, along with government officials, university leaders, and esteemed guests. Ambassador Mwanaidi emphasized that UDSM aims to maintain its leadership in education, research, and innovation in Africa. The HEET program, a major higher education development project, is a testament to this commitment, transforming the university's infrastructure to meet modern standards.

But here's where it gets controversial... The university's focus on AI and digital technologies in teaching and research has sparked debates. Ambassador Mwanaidi believes this integration is essential to keep up with global advancements. However, some argue that it may lead to over-reliance on technology, potentially neglecting traditional teaching methods.

Prof. William Anangisye, the Vice Chancellor, provided an update on the curriculum review process, which includes validation, approval, and accreditation. Over 250 curricula have been reviewed, with 242 already submitted for approval, and 49 receiving accreditation. This rigorous process ensures that UDSM's programs meet the highest standards.

As the university moves forward with its vision, it invites discussion and feedback. Are these changes truly beneficial for students' future prospects? How can universities balance innovation and traditional education? Share your thoughts below!
